Struggling with my doubts

Hello everybody,

I have a nephew of almost three who present troubles similar to those of autism:
- love the washing machine
- rotate objects
- tends to make repeated movements with his hands
- does not respond to his name
- expresses his needs (hunger, except, other) only with his " mother", not even with his father.
What worries me is that the only people who gave an opinion on his condition ('a social worker' 'a general practitioner') said that he was still small and nobody will be able to give a diagnosis at is his age ....

it seems that it is normal for some children to have no social interactions with those around them, and that this trait of caracter changes with age.

The kid does not know how to speak, he uses some words only with his mom ....
his behavior reminds me of autism, but I still do not understand the reaction of specialists.

Many thanks for your advices,

Sadly they are right in that its to early to be able to give any diagnose at this age so the best advice i can give is wait and observe at this stage.

and as soon as possible ask for a evaluation to conclude if and if so what diagnose said child may have

Also make shore to carefully keep written journals (doctors statements etc... Of his early behavior as you will need this when its time to evaluate and they will ask for evidence that this have occured from young age and what kind .This is ONE of the criterias to get diagnosed

Some are actually late in their development so the doc and social worker are actually right in this (i was also late in my development )

My nephew was diagnosed with autism at age 2. He is now almost 30 years old. Early diagnosis is becoming commonplace - at least in the USA - and the earlier a child is diagnosed and can receive appropriate intervention therapies, the better off the child will be over the course of his lifetime. I am no expert but your nephew sounds like he is on the spectrum. A 3 year old child who does not speak or respond to his name has something very serious going on because the vast majority of 3 year old children both speak and respond to their names. A general medical practitioner and a social worker are not autism experts so I hope you can persuade his parents to take him to a competent expert for evaluation.

I agree with you on this Mary Terry that it seems to be something wrong and probaly ASD and or other diagnosis HOWEVER

Doctors look at the child's behavior and development to make a diagnosis. ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable. However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until much older.

As do i agree the social worker or the doc is not cert to evaluate this BUT they can also be right in that many children actually are late in both speech and social interaction that dont have diagnosis hence they have pushed back the evaluation age to make shore not to jump to conclosion ahead of time

They dident find my MBD until i was 4 and got my first evaluation for example. the rest is in my sig and speaks its own language in this age matter and how quikly diagnosis can be found
