Special Talent and Interests?

In order for others to get to know a little bit more about those in this forum, I just wanted to ask everyone what their special interests or talents were? And so whether you have Aspergers Syndrome, Autism, or are a parent, caregiver or friend of one with such condition, or relate to the people here, please share something about you that makes you interesting and special.

In other words, what things are you either really good at, or have much fun with, or that you spend lots of time with because of ability, habit, love, or need? These talents and interests need not be unique, but commonly occurring in society, too, but if you have any different activities, talents or interests, please share those, too, no matter how usual. Thanks.

For me, I have many interests. I love writing, and analyzing. I also love self-help things, continually focusing on being my best. As well, I love practicing singing now, despite always prior fearing that. I am getting pretty good with that. My talent is I can write books easily, and quickly. I have written four so far, but each lasted less than about a month or less to write.

An usual thing I do not tell many is I have a huge Marshawn Lynch sports card collection. I will not say how many cards, but say lots and lots. I was a huge collector of his since 2007 when he was drafted by Buffalo, and collected through all of his Seattle years too. And soon through his playing now in Oakland, too.

I have many interest's mate.. The trouble i have is maintaining concentration on the interests, but ive found i can truly focus on my gardening hobby.. Its one of the few things i can do without rushing about... So its gardening for me...!:)

That is a unique interest and talent. Thank You. :) It makes things easier for me, as I often get stressed by research.

I am very lucky in that I have spent the last 50 years working with my special interest, machines. I spent most of that time working as a field service technician, which means that I work alone. I like it so much that I am still doing it. How lucky can one Aspie be?

My wife wants to one day start up gardening. We have a great almost 3-acre subdivision parcel, with no neighbors in view, and would like to create something near our new home which is on the looped end of a cul-de-sac. The land is semi-wooded and semi-open, and with privacy, but a residential feel. We feel a nice flower garden would fit right in.

My wife says she cannot think of any interests or talents she currently has, as she has concentration difficulties and difficulties finishing potential interests to a conclusion, thus resulting in less talents. I tell her she has lots of interests or talents like photography, keeping important paperwork and documents in containers, but she says that she needs to try something more.

Gardening has been a tremendous help mate... Very therapeutic. . and very good for stress.. Its like being in another world for me... You'll be suprised how helpful it would be to you both. . wow your lucky to have all that land... Its your canvas and the flowers your paint....!:)

Any job working alone is my dream job, so I relate much there. What would society be without machines? Not too advanced one would think. That is a nice interest and talent to have.

I would say one thing that I'm good at is making things. I mainly sew at the moment, but I like to learn new crafts and I can usually pick them up very quickly. The only one I've tried that I really couldn't get to grips with was knitting.

Right now our oldest son is going to his Art therapy class, in about five minutes. He does that once a week, besides his singing lessons. He loves making crafts there, so much that he does not want I to ever take turns with him in making those creations. It's ok, we can get some craft games to play there, that can involve all.

i have always had art as an obsessive interest [drawing/painting/photography etc] though i am not especially good at it,my photography is a bit better.
i go to a professional art studio for people with intellectual disability which is similar sounding to what your son does as its not just about getting your wares shown across galleries alover the country its also about the theraputic side, one of the guys who goes there has been on 'the undateables'.
i do ceramics there, its £19 a half day session,i could have done photography but they go out a lot with lots of walking involved-not compatible with my physical disability.

my other obsessive interest is anything involving animals or fish, whether its looking after them or buying things with animals on including steiff bears and charlie bears.

I forgot to say I loved paintings too, for one of my other non-mentioned interests. I like doing landscapes and seascapes, with either acrylic or oil. They are pretty precise, but not 100% like a photograph. Maybe with 80 to 90% accuracy. I use my imagination though to create those scenes.

Aaron's art class is an hour long, and he uses clay, markers, beads, paper, styrofoam, foam board, cardboard, and things like that. The therapist keeps asking us are you sure he has Autism, as he is very polite, social, and enthusiastic? Well, yes I say, 5 specialists cannot be wrong. Once he focuses on his interests, and does not deviate from certain routines, he acts like an NT in many ways.

That is an interesting fact about one of the guys being on "The Undateables." I am from the US, but a British friend told me about that show on Twitter awhile ago, and it sounded interesting, but there was a lot of controversy surrounding the shows theme. Another interesting fact was in 2015 or 2016 the best selling genre of nonfiction books was coloring books for adults. Who would think that coloring books for adults would be so popular. My wife loves them though. It reduces her stress and increases her focus and eye for detail.

Aaron loves collecting stuffed animals and pillow pets. He has at least fifty now.

I have high functioning autism/ asperger's and my special interests are maths, art and swimming.

I love Math, too. I majored in that at the university where I studied. My wife has me do all the banking stuff and budgeting, as she hates numbers and calculations. She says she always gets numbers mixed up and the totals wrong. Anything to do with logic or left brain functioning she seems to have difficulties with. I seem to have an equal balance of abilities there.

I seem to gravitate towards anything outside-ish like plants, camping, fishing, rocks, slugs, snakes, birds, water, maps ect... and not so outdoorsy- hand dryers. That's a long story how that happened but when I was still on FB I posted pictures of every hand dryer I encountered and had quite a few people who seemed to like them.

Just got back from Dallas and I'm sure I drove everybody crazy because of my excitement about palm trees and agaves and cactus. I also like to do art and crafts. Animals are my favorite subjects for that sorta thing though I will draw, paint, or craft most anything. The thing with my interest is I don't memorize a bunch of facts so much as just generally spend a lot of time looking, growing, picking up, making. I can't tell you the parts of a bug but I will get super excited should I happen to find an acorn weevil. I will pick it up, look at it, talk about it, admire it's snout, and generally be interested at a level others find extremely odd.

I enjoy long distance running and competing in races. I've been running since I was probably 12 years old and now I'm 29. Wow, I feel old after writing that last sentence. I actually didn't really enjoy it all that much until I was in college, but I stuck with it and it has been a positive in my life for the most part. I also enjoy working with numbers and am analytical which is critical for success as an accountant. I like a lot of the work I do at my job, but I don't like dealing with all the crap that comes with it.

Our son Dylan absolutely loves the outdoors. He especially loves putting his hands in dirt and trying to eat that, so we have to make sure he is always near to prevent that. Also, we have to watch him closely as he darts away to try to find shiny objects like tin cans, reflective packages, and inspecting those. He has this uncanny ability to find those items buried under things. Once though he saw a snake, when on his Easter hunt, and went right up to it to pick it up. Dylan has no concept at all yet of danger. Aaron is getting better there.

What I will be super excited about is if I can find a whip-poor-will bird that keeps me all night each summer. There are only a few nocturnal birds in our area, so I listened to all the sounds of those birds on a website, and found the name of that bird which is making those sounds. It apparently is a small bird, but it is so loud and goes on and on for hours with their song. I cannot even have the windows open.

The least I could do it get it on video one night. It would be like finding a needle in a haystack though amongst all these tall evergreens.

Have been taking small appliances apart since I was a child, in order not to get caught 'breaking things' I would disassemble them and reassemble them in my bedroom closet. Today I fixed an upright vacumn cleaner, replaced the belt, repaired the brush rollers, and rewired it. So those early furtive 'taking apart of things' to see how things worked, seems to have helped.

Paint and draw and collage, and no longer sell my art, which makes me happy. I dig and hunt fossils and victorian era bottles, brass, and make trellises from dried tree roots that I find in the dump down by the river. Sew and make other things and do a little bit of carpentry. Also garden and long distance cycle, but not at the same time.
