I just found out the the ice racing (cars) this winter doesn't allow spectators to attend, just the drivers

*sigh* Extremely disappointed, was really hoping to go watch/photograph :( Just the story of my life...

Go volunteer as the staff photographer. Make a point of assuring them you won't get hit, and show some superior work of the lads in action.

I am going to reach out to a friend of mine, but who is also a far better photographer than me and involved with the host club for many years... I'm just the rookie this time around with this one...

I used to ask a friendly small town newspaper for press credentials with the promise I would write them an article. A small newspaper seems to appreciate that kind of assistance.

Man, you do a lot of close-up work with a wide-angle lens. Do you REALLY want to be in the middle of out of control cars on the ice with that setup? If you're serious about capturing the event, borrow my R5, a tripod, and my Sigma 650mm with the 1.4x multiplier so you can photograph the vehicles from out of harm's way. I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm rather fond of you and do not wish to see you squished under a riced-up Subaru on a cold day.

😆

I do own a long lens too, just don't use it too often, and sadly it's not an F/2.8, but still a long lens

I demand proof! :p

There's no way I took this photo with my wide angle lens :p , the Dirt Cross they did in November

Using a slow shutter speed and panning with the subject to blur the scenery gives a sense of speed and improves action pics.

The results of motion tracking slalom often look like a cross between photography and finger painting.
With manual control, you can do things robots have not learned yet. Also, finger painting counts as a graphic art, and can be excellent. On my best "action" shot, only one logo on the subject is in clear focus, with more smearing of the vehicle radiating out from there, but it was very well known and easy to identify - another technical picture was not needed. Having it bursting out of a linearly-smeared background made the picture art. I only wish I'd gotten lucky with one of the other logos. Could have been valuable.

I get you, November for a Rallycross was the first time I've photographed car racing in over ten years

The next ice race is now delayed until mid-February, the ice isn't thick enough, but I'm sure the same rules will apply still
