Mom of a newly diagnosed Asperger Girl

Hi! I am the mom of an amazing, creative, highly gifted 12 year old girl who was recently diagnosed with Aspergers (yes they did say that is not the official word anymore, but that is what it is). She has always been unique and quirky, but brilliant, with some characteristics of adhd and aspergers and gifted overexcitabilities. She didn't seem to have enough markers for an educational diagnosis, though it was agreed that she needed "something" so she was given an IEP under EBD. As Middle School became more of a challenge, we had outside testing done, and they felt that all of her challenges from sensory issues to anxiety to executive functioning deficits were all being driven by Aspergers. Hoping to gain a better understanding of her and connect with other parents to see what works, what doesn't, and just have a forum of those who understand. Thank you for letting me join your forum

If her IQ is high enough, you might find gifted/SENG/Mensa resources to be helpful, too, in addition to what can be found here. That dual condition is known as Twice Exceptional(ity?) and they each affect the presentation of the other.

Thanks, we uses SENG as well as Davidson's Gifted Forums on 2E as resources as well. It does seem middle school is bringing out her "2nd E" quite a bit more than grade school did, looking forward to exploring it more on this forum.
