Looking for (neuro)psychiatrist in Boston area or beyond

Phoenix2

Well-Known Member
My current psychiatrist has been getting things dangerously wrong, so I need a new one. Medication is very helpful for me when done right, so I'm on the right track, but I've been working with the wrong doctor for my case. I live near Boston, but I'm willing to travel to find someone with expertise in treating adults on the autism spectrum. My symptoms and drug sensitivities may be unusual, even for someone on the spectrum, so it's important that I see someone who's good at individualizing treatment, rather than going by generalizations. I've contacted AANE and am awaiting their reply. I also just submitted an intake form to the Lurie Center, but I suspect they won't accept my case.

Try Community Autism Resources. They maintain a list of specialists, I believe, and may be able to find you specialists in Boston, or nearer to you. CAR is a fantastic agency, and they help adults as well as children. :)

Thanks! The area they serve is a bit far from me, but I'd definitely travel there for a good doctor.

Phoenix, I also don't live in the Southcoast area. Their resources cover specialists in Boston, too! They maintain listings in many parts of the state. Sometimes we need a dentist, ophthalmologist, etc. who "gets" ASD, and CAR keeps a list of doc's as well as OTs, therapists, etc.

They are well worth calling! They know people can't always get out to Swansea. Actually, they meet me over at the Attleboro Publiv Library for individual, one-on-one clinics. They may meet in other locations too, I think. Their web page will likely say, if I recall, where else they can meet with you. Fantastic people! :)

I would try the Fenway- my feeling is that they generally see a disproportionately larger number of people on the spectrum

Thanks for the recommendation! However, when I check http://fenwayhealth.org/care/behavioral-health/psychiatry/, I get a popup message, which seems relatively new and includes the following: "New clients seeking individual therapy and psychiatry services must be established as existing patients in Fenway’s Primary Care, with the exception of clients who identify as transgender, as well as those living with HIV/AIDS. Treatment for substance use disorder and group therapy are open to both Fenway’s primary care patients and those getting primary care elsewhere." I am neither transgender nor HIV+, and I'd prefer not to give up my primary care doctor at Mass. General. I highly respect Fenway's focus on the LGBT community, so I can understand their priorities here. Have you heard of exceptions being made for people on the autism spectrum?

Ah, no I'm sorry I think I misunderstood- I've been a bit spacey lately I didn't mean to give the wrong info.

I think at the time I thought you were. Looking for completely new team I apologize, I'll try to pay more attention.

No need to apologize. It was very nice of you to mention Fenway.
