Is there anyone that can help me find a doctor? North NJ/NYC, NY

Hi everyone!

I have been having trouble finding doctors in the north jersey area and nyc area that both treat Aspergers and accept my UnitedHealthCare Community Plan insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions at some doctors? Many of the doctors that I call dont accept "any" insurance plans. I haven't even been diagnosed with Aspergers yet because I cannot find a doctor/specialist for it. Please can anyone help me? I spent like 5 hours or more already and I still haven't found one that meets the above requirements.

Hi, Marioraider.

UHC Community handles Medicare/Medicaid, primarily. If you are low-income, you may indeed have trouble finding a private doctor in your area. The first thing to do is to check the UHC Community Plan website and browse providers in your area that accept your plan.

Find a Physician

Pick your plan from the drop-down menu, then on the next page, scroll down to Psychology or Psychiatry on the "Specialty Type" menu. You may also want to take a peek at the Public Health section on that same menu.

If you can't find anyone on the site, or if none of them are taking new patients, call your plan's customer service center for assistance.

Another good way to go if you're low-income (even with insurance) and looking for a doctor with experience of Asperger's would be to contact your local public mental health clinic, particularly their "adult intensive services" or equivalent. Don't be afraid to go to a clinic that deals specifically with low-income people. There are in fact some very good practitioners at those places. I've been going to a public mental health clinic for more than two years for routine care, and my counselor and psychiatrist are the best I've ever had, public or private. The quality of care has been outstanding and the cost in my case (I'm uninsured) is next to nothing.

These entities are usually divided by county. If you have a hard time finding out who you should call, or getting set up for intake, feel free to let me know what county you reside in and I will help you get in. My background is in social work, and I know how to get things done in public systems. I've helped a lot of people access services.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
