FOR thousands of years mankind thought the Earth was flat and you could sail to the edge of the world, where you might fall off.

Then by around the 14th century most educated scholars agreed with the viewpoint of the Ancient Greeks that it was, in fact a sphere.

But now, amazingly, thousands of people are reverting back to the age-old theory the globe is more a diorama - with a hardcore among them adding the cherry on top that it is capped off with a glass dome, that prevents us from leaving.

And it is not just YouTube video makers in their bedrooms putting together short films touting the theory.

A series of, in some cases, slick websites trying to convince the world things are much flatter have sprung up.

Most agree the world is not a spherical planet in space, but, instead a disc or plain, but then the theories differ in craziness.

One of the slickest-looking websites is enclosed world.com.

It purports the conspiracy that the disc-like Earth is enclosed in a giant Centre Parks like dome.

It brings together a series of YouTube videos called Flat Earth Clues which started being posted online this year.

In short, the website claims the "flat Earth" is protected by a giant glass dome, the surface of which is higher than any plane can fly..and makes clear this is "NO joke".

It is run by Mark Sargent, an IT specialist, from Boulder, Colorado, who last year in his own words began looking into "what is no doubt the most ridiculous conspiracy ever, called (the) 'Flat Earth Theory.'

But rather than disprove it, Mr Sargent became a convert and then one of its greatest supporters.

His website says: "Through extensive research, (he) discovered that it wasn't so laughable after all.

"Early in 2015, he released a series of youtube videos titled Flat Earth Clues, which delve into the possibility of our human civilisation actually being inside a 'Truman show' like enclosed system, and how it's been hidden from the public since 1956.

"Mark's hope is that one day the 100th Monkey scenario will occur, the majority of the population will start seeing things with new eyes, and the world will literally change."

So what about space travel?

Well that is the conspiracy within the conspiracy.

Mr Sergeant now believes in the moon landings being faked conspiracy.

What's this about 100 monkeys?

Also, while I suppose anything is possible, it's hard for me to accept that people really believe the earth is flat.

And then I followed the link and saw this article:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/scien...nge-food-healthy-eating-greenhouse-gas-planet

I don't think the articles are real. The reason why it's better for the environment to be vegetarian is a simple matter of thermodynamics. The animals you eat also eat plants, and they only store some of the chemical energy in their food--a lot of it is lost to metabolism and waste discharge. Haven't got numbers on it, but I remember it's different for different animals; and pigs are supposed to be less of a problem than cows, but that's still a "middle-man" intercepting the usable energy in there. So adding animals means more land needs to be set aside to grow plants to feed them with. Cut out the animals, you can grow less food since it goes directly for humans. That's less land that needs to be cleared, as well as less animal waste that needs to be disposed of (in the wild, it's discharged into a complex ecosystem that reuses it, but with industrial agriculture it just collects and decays).

Whomever started this one is having a grand laugh I'm sure. I wonder which celebrities are going to endorse the flat earth as fact, when will we see a fake "official government film" with a rocket orbiting and "proving" the earth is flat. Cinematography and a good special effects team can make your eyes believe anything, if a celebrity or two endorses it, well then it must me true. And if you fall for that, I'll sell you that bridge in Brooklyn and, that ocean front property in Arizona. LOL.

They shouldn't be allowed to use satellite TV or GPS until they concede that the Earth is (generally) spherical...!

I love how their proof is called experimental evidence <3
And their library stops at 1904.

I quote their main experimental evidence:
'It is proven that the ship does not sink behind a hill of water, but that it is actually perspective which hides it. This demonstrates that the earth is not a globe. There have been experiments where half-sunken ships have been restored by simply looking at them through telescopes, showing that they are not actually hiding behind "hills of water" '.

In other words.. Somebody looked through a telescope and saw a boat disappear behind a wave (hill of water). And this half sunken ship recovered itself by merely looking through this telescope.. Since the wave went down. Apparently this is proof that the earth is flat. Or you could say it's proof from a book from 1854. Where there where still a lot of followers of the Christian idea that human animals were the center of the universe. (Which is something the Flat Earth Society also believes in.. And you can win 65.000 dollars proving them they're wrong)

We let me tell you something, humanity is really not that much important.

I know some real, deadly serious flat-earthers, people I know online. They tend to believe in chemtrails, reptilian overlords, vaccines being a plot to kill off half the population and so on.

Haven't you heard they updated their text book with a new theory its a flat universe with a edge called the Big Bang theory....Ha! ha ha ha ha ha! :p

sorry! you have to understand the infinite universe concept to get that joke!

All the matter in the universe in one spot at one time...Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! :p

Clown school is missing some promising students I think they wandered into a physics department?

I know a bloke who's job involves simulating, planning and tracking satellite orbit trajectories, who is also a flat-Earther, and claims that he learnt that the Earth is flat through his calculations for said satellite trajectories. I have never been able to figure out if he is serious or just has an odd sense of humour.

They tend to believe in... vaccines being a plot to kill off half the population and so on.
One doesn't have to be a flat-Earther to be cautious about vaccines, but that topic isn't allowed here, so I'll leave it at that. (I don't believe that they cause autism, but you'll have to PM me, if you want more.)

People like this are very popular with certain unsavory types who take advantage of them for fun and profit.

Wait err haven't the astro physicists changed it from big bang? ...to a singularity now, with dark matter and dark energy? (!?)

I don't know kestrel they are desparately looking for a way to claw themselves out of their Fake anti God science hole now that Dark Matter has outed them for the big fruads they are....Harvard just quoted my Dark Matter numbers on Huffington post isn't that interesting?

My numbers are hugely different from the accepted model.:D

Someone out there has been reading my physics posts.:D

I used to study conspiracies. I'm obsessed with it. Because their references are always linking to a forum post somewhere with a gossip etc.

Some flat eat there I know believe in the lizard people.. Who live in the hollow earth theory.. Which portrays the earth as a globe.

Only problem you go in discussion about anything.. You're 'asleep' or you're pittied for being brainwashed.

I love it though when you point out anything and there's an explanation. So NASA and all scientists are just evil witch doctors who voluntarily lie about everything. NASA is a us propaganda institution (this is certainly true!!)

One thing is always true. It starts from a very well placed suspicion for certain institutions and ways of operating in many circles. 'Vriendjes politiek' (politics of friends) and the precarity of the neolibiral ideology who doesn't look out for democracy or its citizens. Than instead of being able to not answer the complexity.. They need to find an answer to their sorrow. It's like religion.

The Earth is not flat! However, contrary what the US Government wants you to think, Area 51 does indeed exist IMO, and there are Aliens there :D

I don't think we're allowed to discuss conspiracy theories on here - I got a message about that in the past during my 'early days' here on Aspiescentral from IContainMultitudes.

This was the message I got back then:

Hi, I just wanted to let you know why I removed a link to SteveQuayle.com in your post in the Syria conflict thread. After looking at that site a bit, it seems to be rather conspiracy theory and pseudoscience heavy. We don't really like to have posts to sites like that for multiple reasons. First of all, conspiracy theory sites frequently push conspiracy theories about vaccines causing autism, and for reasons that I detail here, posts on that topic are not allowed on AC: http://www.aspiescentral.com/asperg...ection-controversy-ac.html?highlight=vaccines

Second, we've had problems with members here who post about conspiracy theories getting trollish and trying to pick fights with people who disagree with them. Third, conspiracy theorists frequently have extreme political agendas that many members on the site would find offensive and upsetting (ex, conspiracy theorists frequently push anti-gay, anti-Semitic, etc. ideas, not saying that you hold any of those ideas, just explaining why we generally don't like links to conspiracy theory-heavy sites).

As such, just be wary of what you're saying - I don't want anyone getting in trouble.
