I can only x if y

Fridgemagnetman

I only have one
V.I.P Member
The idea is to post a truth or half truth about yourself by replacing the x and the y, as per my example.

I can only shave

If

My eyes are closed

(Always cut myself if I shave with my eyes open)

I can only eat a bowl of soup

If

I can use the one and only actual soup spoon we own.

I should probably just buy more soup spoons...but then they wouldn't be *my* soup spoon. I am really weird about our cutlery.

My younger brother, who has some Autistic traits but not enough for a diagnosis, is very much like that - he will only use certain cutlery when eating at home.

I can only go on a date if the woman asks me out.
I can only give out too much information when its inappropriate.

i dont understand this? can someone explain it for me please?

So basically, something like...I think I remember you mentioning before that you can't eat unless you're alone..

"I can only eat
If
Nobody else is in the room"

i dont understand this? can someone explain it for me please?

This is symbolic logic, based in: If X then Y or: X ) Y

So as an example:

X= I can only sing Y= If my mouth is open

X ) Y (the parentheses should be a backwards C that represents then)

In this example X represents singing and Y represents an open mouth.

If my mouth is open, it could mean that I might talk, eat or sing. My mouth being open doesn't imply that I'm singing, I could be drinking coffee or talking. So Y does not imply X.

But X implies Y

If I am singing my mouth must be open, as you can't sing with your mouth closed. You can hum, but you can't really sing without opening your mouth.

So: I can only sing if my mouth is open. X)Y or:

I can sing
If
my mouth is open (If X then Y)

Not:
My mouth is open
if
I can sing (If Y not X)

We have one fork that I avoid like my life depends on it :tearsofjoy:
Hahaha, I'm glad more people do this. My boyfriend makes fun of me for going out of my way to avoid half of our cutlery. I just like rounded handles that are smooth. Not my fault :D

Haha! You lost me on: So.......... :-)

Yeah, I think I lost myself. Symbolic logic is not easy and it's been 20 years.
Write one and I'll see if I can explain from your example.

I will try! I suck at this stuff, but it's good for the ol brain.............

Or maybe @Fridegmagnetman didn't mean it to be used as symbolic logic and meant it to be a game only.

You answer this question:

What is something you can only do under certain conditions?

By filling in the blanks of this sentence:

I can only _______________ if _____________________.
(thing you do ⇧ )............(conditions you need ⇧)

For example:
  • I can only drink coffee if the coffee has milk in it .
  • I can only eat pancakes if I use the red plastic fork
