As a 12-stepper, I hear people telling me all the time that I need to find my higher power, and I know they are right because doing things my way has screwed up my life repeatedly.

I have been agnostic for a long while, and that is a barrier.

I can’t handle this by myself, and I can’t rely on others 24/7 either.

Start by studying the Torah and not the Christianity or Judaism Talmud. Neither of those are who the bible calls Israel. Unfortunately like politics and most things in this world man does they give you two choices and say you must choose. The bible says different it says those that will be my people Israel they will follow me and hear and DO everything I say. Then he tells them what to do in his "marriage" ie:Covent contract which is the Torah.

Calm reflective meditation works for many of us. I personally do not listen to most of the advice others give me. I like to figure out most things on my own.

It is my belief that we all have a higher power. So if You want to connect with your higher self or spiritual guide, that is one thing. However if you are told you need to do something then that is another story. I like to encourage others to be True to Themself. Do that and you will always be happy.

Well. Why not research? For me it's being a Christian. Though independent of the church. I read the Bible and saw it matched up with what I saw in life and my own experiences.

There may be answer to be found, yet it may not necessarily be through any conventional religion. And that it may find you, as opposed to you seeking it. I was an agnostic for years, until I had an unsolicited paranormal encounter. Only until then did I attempt to "work the problem".

Imagine if you eventually concluded that your existence, while painful and arduous turned out to be exactly what was cosmically intended for your soul.

Would it be so bad if you were to come to terms with your own existence, for better and for worse? That bad things can happen to good people because it's how we learn and evolve as eternal souls.

    You never know. ;)

Changing who you are is very hard to do, most notably what is hard wired in your brain, plasticity is there, as I am finding out through my recovery from my stroke. the bottom line is is difficult to get some where if, first of all you do not know where your going.

Honestly, @KagamineLen , that's your personal journey. No one can live it for you. What is truth to you? Try prayer. Even if it's a messy one like, "I don't know if anyone can hear this, but I need help. I can't do this alone. I need you to help me stay sober. Please teach me how to live without alcohol (or other substances), because I'm a total screw up. I will do anything to quit. Teach me how to live."

I am starting to become agnostic again. I am questioning my faith because how can a God make me suffer with ASD which limits my life.

From my own perspective I believe we craft our own reincarnations that usually involve various degrees of suffering. To enlighten and educate us as eternal souls. It's how an eternal being grows. Something that cannot occur on our primary plane of existence which is void of pain and suffering.

That as eternal souls we're quite magnanimous when it comes to crafting the suffering of our temporary mortal existence. That it's not God's choice, but our own.

Though from time to time I wonder whether God or angels intercede in "bailing us out" if and when our mortal lives become entirely untenable. Where even our spirit guides recommend we come on "home". Which could reflect continued life or immediate death. A cosmic "mulligan" of sorts. ;)

Try the writings of Peter Kreeft & Fr Peter Kucer. Then try to disprove them as it's always good to put new ideas to the test.

Agnosticism & immaterial atheism are both interesting; I think that atheism & Catholicism are really the two reasonable positions: either all or nothing.

My way involved holding on to grudges for decades. Life is too short for that. I need to let those grudges go. It is like drinking poison while expecting others to hurt because of it. It will lead me back into my toxic addictions, to booze, to pornography, to marijuana, to drama and chaos.

I need a God in my life to take this off my hands. I need a higher calling. My own way is not working.

Also, could we please take the psychedelic drug debate elsewhere? Thanks!

"Entheogens are psychoactive substances that induce alterations in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behaviour for the purposes of engendering spiritual development or otherwise in sacred contexts. Anthropological study has established that entheogens are used for religious, magical, shamanic, or spiritual purposes in many parts of the world. Entheogens have traditionally been used to supplement many diverse practices geared towards achieving transcendence, including divination, meditation, yoga, sensory deprivation, asceticism, prayer, trance, rituals, chanting, imitation of sounds, hymns like peyote songs, drumming, and ecstatic dance.

The psychedelic experience is often compared to non-ordinary forms of consciousness such as those experienced in meditation, near-death experiences, and mystical experiences. Ego dissolution is often described as a key feature of the psychedelic experience."

@KagamineLen, I don't believe in God as many people do. More clearly, I don't believe in religion. But I have found by being still I can feel some power in the universe and I have gotten a response from that power.

In fact, you posted your question and many lovely people answered you. So, you ARE being heard.

You don't have to follow a religion. You just need to be still and quiet your mind. The more you practice being still in your thoughts, the easier it gets. When your mind is quiet then ask your question or ask for help. The hard part is not judging or questioning. The hard part is just accepting you will get answers and help. So keep stilling your mind it will help to keep you focused.

Well there's always the altar call thingy, you know ask Jesus into your heart kinda thing. You can ask for it in private prayer if you prefer privacy. It's a form of possession, but the good kind I guess. It's not automatic and some people have to wait for it. Mostly God laughs at me and lets me be stupid, but sometimes he helps. I've had a great many supernatural experiences so I needed a valid explanation for them. The bible is fascinating. I have heard of people asking for proof in prayer, like God, if you are real, please show me sorta thing, dunno how that goes.

So...you've never had deja vu, precognition, strange coincidences, stuff that makes you question material 'reality'?

It's called blessings and cursings we all get them based on whether we obey or not. It is part of the covenant ie: contract we made with him in Deuteronomy at mt. Sinai.

Both instances are supposed to strengthen our faith and belief.

I'm a bit late to the party here because of course I am, being late to things is like, my gimmick (no seriously, IRL I'm late to *everything*)

But I just wanted to second this part.

There's a line I heard in a Youtube comment once (what a place to get insight, hah) and it goes something like: "nobody believes in the paranormal until it hits them in the face" and at this point... yeah. I agree with that line.

There's no way to be ready for it, either. When/if it happens... it just bloody HAPPENS. For me it was near the end of last year (I think that's when it started, my memory is so bad). Two incidents, the first being abrupt and short, the second only the start of something ongoing. First one was HORRID. Ran from that. I'm not the sort to experience nightmares when I sleep, but if I did, all of them would be about that incident. The second incident is just... constant, it doesnt stop. Not BAD, just constant and mildly annoying because it cant just come with a bloody instruction manual.

I've never really been the super skeptical sort to begin with, simply because that strikes me as illogical... who am I to make assumptions about the truth of freaking reality? I cant even do simple division, like basic math stuff, I aint qualified to even start to think I have the answers to the big questions. But at this point, even if I had been the skeptical sort... I wouldnt be anymore, because I'd be making a complete doofus of myself if I was. It'd be like trying to pretend that my car doesnt exist when I'm sitting in it.

My point is... that I've had a lot of caffeine and am having trouble remaining coherent.

In all seriousness though, @KagamineLen, what I'm saying is that the answer may come in a surprising way. And the important think is to truly THINK about it, when something occurs that may be a bit... odd. The world presents you with all sorts of screwball challenges and puzzles. It's just how it works. This topic is another one of those, and how you go about dealing with it is entirely up to you. Some of us can offer advice on how to deal with it, but... you have to figure out what actions to take to learn whatever it is you need to learn.

I'd try to advise you but I dont know enough. And I'm not sure what would help in your specific situation.

Am I making ANY sense at all here? I'm so jittery.

    That's enough of me rambling.

@KagamineLen You may, now that you’ve asked, find many surprising twists and turns ahead.
And one can stay open-minded if one chooses to do so. Your posts show a powerful amount of horsepower in your gray cells. ;)
Who knows it may be Hermes or Zeus or Artemis who answers your questions.
Sometimes answers are already with us, we decide when to see them.

I cannot get over the feeling that God is not on my side, especially not now during this extended period of forced isolation, where I can only leave my house to go to my job and bus service is extremely limited due to the pandemic.

God is on everyone's side that follow him. A better question would be what God is the side you choose?
