Help! Can't sleep

My brain is in overdrive and I can't quiet it... Thought upon thought upon thought, round and round and round... I am so tired...

Any advice?

I need to sleep, I have three small children to get up with and me + no sleep + them = bad day all round :(

Hopefully you're asleep now! Me and sleep have had a rocky relationship my entire existence. I have prescription sleeping pills if I'm desperate, but prefer not to due to side effects and not wanting to be addicted. I have a strict sleep/wake routine that keeps things regular for awhile, but I still have nights like you where my mind is just spinning. I just try not to worry. If I only get a few hours of sleep, then that's how it is. I had cognitive behavioral therapy to get to that point though! Also, if you're just lying there, don't continue to lie there. Get up, do something, and try again. Again, hope you're having a good sleep as I type!

I have this problem a lot. The only thing that works is to try to clear your head, maybe think of something uninteresting like changing poopy diapers.

One thing I've found to help with my sleep is ambient sound. My clock radio play five or six sound effects that are looped. The one I use almost all the time is rainfall. I just love it...very soothing. Of course staying asleep at times remains a challenge. Once I wake then my brain boots up like a hard drive.

Try taking deep breaths about 7 straight, you have to lower your heart rate in order to put you in a sleep realm which takes exactly 7 minutes to fully fall asleep.

I can definitely say that I never needed an alarm clock. All I have to do is make a mental note of the time I need to be up and I will be awake 15-20 minutes prior to that time. I have no idea how that works.

Thanks for all the responses!

LittleLemon I did manage to drift off yeah thankyou!

I don't know why I didn't think of rainfall... I used to use it to get my toddler asleep when he was a baby so I should've thought of it.

Deep controlled breathing and guided meditation works for me. I have nights like you often with a racing mind.

Pleasuring yourself may help too!

i second what kirsty says,i do mindfulness to stop my raging thoughts and it helps to get me better and ready for sleep, but my sleeping issues are lifelong,i have given upp all hope of sleeping properly and just lie in bed rocking till its time to get up.

i can only recommend to try avoiding getting into a patern of believing you wont sleep-this will put a thought in the back of your mind that you cant sleep and it wont happen.
try to use mindfulness to get thoughts out of your mind and avoid using technology like your computer or a tv,this will keep your brain waves in awake mode

Watch porn last thing at night, then you'll drift off into a vivid dream of shagging the girl of your dreams.

OK yeah I'll just be over there getting my coat.

Try aerobic exercise for next time. If you're afraid of your bedsheets getting all sweaty, who cares? You can always wash them when you get up etc. Your sleep is more important. If you're listening to ambient music such as raindrops, consider yoga or general stretches that will help your body be more flexible.
