Harrison

The Mad Taoist
Someone made me open the lid on my special interest box recently and it's a tad open still. So, whilst it is continuing to pique my interest I thought I'd have a poll.

"Really" I hear you ask, "what's that about then?"

Hopefully the selections are self explanatory, and the poll itself is simple. The basis is to see how we perceive the root of our Apergers to have come about.

I believe my Aspergers is genetic, that's just my opinion and doesn't make it right, and that it acts upon the psychological pathways. There is a choice in the poll for that too.

Anyway, I am interested in your views more than mine as I already know mine so it's not much fun.

Poll itself is basic, meant to wet your appetite, so feel free to add your views of yourself (not Aspergers as a whole) and why you feel the way you do.

Oooo goody, I like polls.. I wouldn't have minded clicking the "God(dess)/Creator/Evolution/Aliens wanted to make my life interesting." one too, as I must confess to being a bit of a believer in Fate; I think we're here to learn, we don't just live a pants life then die and that's the end of it!.. Just my view though..
But I've gone for Genetics as, physically speaking, I can't see the thing just happening by chance :)

I've changed it so you can have two votes :D

You're bloody good Harrison, me old mate.. given your Taoist beliefs and the fact that you put the option there in the first place though, what's your view on it.. if you don't mind my asking?

As a Taoist I would say that I chose to be born into the body of a human that had a neurodiverse alignment, and I did this to create a certain type of personality in order to experience life in a specific manner.

The science guy in me says that I was born into this body not knowing it was genetically different and my first words were 'Oh ****!'

Speaking as an open minded individual with Buddhist leanings, we're in agreement there, my friend.. you're obviously happy with the dichotomy also - Science Vs Belief. To me, it simply is what it is..

I have strong reasons to believe that my personal experience with my autism spectrum disorder is of genetic nature and nothing more.

I was fortunate in my 'other life' to have scientists and medics working alongside me, no one saw a conflict of interests as each was happy to blow up their ivory tower before joining me. Good days.

I think mine has a genetic basis but that it wouldn't have been so pronounced had I grown up in a healthy, safe family.

I also think God values diversity and purposely created the potential for such variety in neurological wiring. But I think that, ultimately, through the struggle, His intent is for the struggle to draw us closer to Him, not to destroy us but to help us lean into Him more.

My opinion for now... :)

Being the only diagnosed Aspie in my family, but knowing there are/were others with strong traits, yet live(d) in undiagnosed bliss, I know genetics got the boat afloat.

My own observations, contemplation, desires, needs, reactions, and actions keep up the momentum and plots the course.

Conditioning/nurturing (or lack thereof) alters the trajectory. This causes me to go back and re-plot the course, given new conditions and information.

The problem is, I have no destination in mind. But I'm finding that I need to go back to having the journey be the purpose of life. I was much happier when destinations and goals were just thought of as transition points, nothing more than the end of one particular journey.

My official answer would simply be, "I don't know."

Scientifically I'd likely lean to biological considerations and genetics.

However metaphysically I lean towards the possibility that WE as eternal spirits deliberately chose to give ourselves this condition as another aspect of whatever "lesson" we set out for ourselves to learn in this particular reincarnation of an earthly life.

I guess I have to admit to an itchy belief in the idea that I chose this incarnation, and continue to make choices that put me in positions to learn "whatever lesson" I'm being taught.

I believe that I was born this way. I think that this is because it makes the most sense to me. Research, mine and others, is what leads to these conclusions. Because of the way my mind works, the scientific point of view almost always make the most sense to me. So, I voted for "biological-genetics".

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "condition of the mind" and how it's not "biological"? Scientifically speaking, from all I know about psychology and neurology (not enough, I confess) the mind IS biological. Are you meaning it to be in a more spiritual context?

I think someone in my dad's side of the family had AS. :)
I also have people in my family who have traits of AS. Though that has probably nothing to do with me being an aspie, it is still interesting to think about. :P
