Eminem And Aspergers.
Eminem has disclosed in his song ‘Wicked ways’ that he has Aspergers.
The song which appeared on his album Marshall Mathers Lp 2 has the lyrics:
Ever heard of Aspergers? Its a rare condition,
Its what you’re suffering from when you simply don’t care if its an 80 degree day
And theres no frickin air conditioning.”
In another song called Legacy he raps:
I used to be the type of kid that would always think the sky is falling,
Why am I so differently wired? Am I a martian?
What kind of twisted experiment am I involved in?
‘Cause I don’t belong in this world
Thats why I’m scoffing at authority, defiant often,
Flying off the handle at my mom,no dad
So I am non-compliant at home,at school I’m just shy and awkward,
And I don’t need no goddamn psychologist
Tryna diagnose why I have all these underlying problems”.
Eminem has in the past fought a court case after being accused of pistol whipping a bouncer he saw kissing his then wife Kimberley Mathers, was famously sued by his own mother and has successfully overcome an addiction to the painkillers vicodin.
He has successfully crossed over to acting appearing in films such as The Wash, ,the hugely successful 8 mile and most recently The interview.
The admission he has Aspergers comes as no great surprise as he has always pushed boundaries and has a unique and never heard before versatility lyrically literally stunning his fans with his touching, sometimes humorous and frequently dark lyrics.
Eminem aka Marshall Bruce Mathers the third was born on the 17th of October 1972 to Deborah Mathers. His father left when he was an infant and he grew up near the notorious eight mile road in Detroit.
His mother remembers him speaking in full sentences as early as aged 2 and walking before his first birthday. She writes in her book “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem’ that he would hum and bounce himself in his car seat and high chair soothing himself to sleep as an infant.
He had a vivid imagination tearing round the house in his batman cape fighting imaginary foes and loved to illustrate his own comic books. He had an infatuation with dinosaurs and owned a good variety of books on the prehistoric age.
He preferred to be at home writing poetry, drawing comic book characters and reading.
He regularly feigned illness to stay home from school where he says he was shy and awkward.
At home his mother alleges he would have violent outbursts.
At aged 10 Marshall was bullied regularly which one day culminated in an injury that rendered him fitting on the school bathroom floor bleeding from both his ears and nose.He had been hit with a block of ice thrown by his tormentor and sustained a cerebral haemorrhage which rendered him unconscious for days in hospital and took five months to recover from.
Marshall reportedly suffered Post traumatic stress disorder from the attack.
His best friend and uncle Ronnie Polkingharn passed away when Marshal was still in his teens and he plunged into depression emerging from it more determined then ever to make something of himself.
He married his childhood sweetheart Kimberley during this time and they had a little girl whom they named Hailie Jade.
Since a young age Marshall had written poetry and dabbled with rap lyrics siting LL Cool J and Slick Rick as inspiration. He began writing more intensely and performing on stage battle rapping and often getting booed off stage when out matched or overcome with nerves unable to rap at all. He released his first album “infinite”, but exploded onto the mainstream music scene after legendary hip hop producer Dr. Dre heard a demo tape of him at Interscope record president Jimmy Lovine’s house. Dre had Eminem fly out with his then manager Paul Rosenberg to meet with him in LA. The rest is history.
I was lucky enough to see Eminem on his first UK tour at London Arena.I was in the first five through the doors after camping out overnight to see him and was happily crushed on the barriers watching him work the crowd up to a veritable frenzy wielding a chainsaw and wearing blue dungarees and a hockey mask.
I was to see him twice more at Reading Festival where he thrilled us with a guest appearance from Marilyn Manson during the hit ‘The way I Am’ and lastly at Milton Keynes for his Anger Management tour.
After ‘ My Name Is….’ exploded onto MTV and hit the radio waves he became unstoppable,.He quickly brought out album after album his first being The Slim Shady LP which sold 300,000 copies in one week.
Eminem’s no boundaries versatility which can provoke tears with songs such as “Hailies song”. ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’ and more recently ‘Headlights’ where he lays his feelings bare to the highly controversial ‘Kim’ where he murders his wife while his daughter reputedly lies sleeping in her cot to the truly intricate lyrically stunning release of the song ‘Rap God’ will make sure he reigns as the top name in hop hop entertainment for years to come.
His admission of having Aspergers will help bring Aspergers and autism into the public eye raising awareness and I hope promoting acceptance.
