Does anyone find advertising to be really stupid?

I find myself laughing during advertising. Sometimes it pisses off people around me. They don't see the humor... ie the razor commercials out there: the new high speed razor 7 bladed lubricated with a waffle iron, etc.. turns into a jet airplane and lands on your face or a two robot razors racing, etc... ... they're just weird! I mean, who the hell thinks of robots when shaving?!? I'm high fx, so I sometimes don't notice the differences I have from NTs. However, I feel that my superpower is that I'm impervious to the manipulation of advertisers. (BTW, Ram trucks are not that tough, LOL!).

Do the same, sometimes I tell the the television advertisers to shut-up. They have only recently begun to manipulate men more with products, especially razors, dislike the one with the razor with orange moving spheres on the side. Don't know which one it is but they look like orange skin.

They certainly play on people's insecurities. Hate it when they try to tell to you how to be.

I think a lot of it is supposed to be a trigger for your unconscious to form rapid associations with societal masculine ideals and the product.
They don't really want you to take them seriously or even think about the ad consciously at all, they just want to initiate an emotional reaction to their products while in the semi aware state we often find ourselves in while engaged in shopping in an environment which bombards the senses with stimuli and encourages this state.

Ads are just despicable things

Of course, advertising is stupid. Because the people that watch it and fall for the crap are stupid themselves.

What brands do you have right now in your home freediver?

I was going to write a post saying that I hate ads because they target dumb, easy-to-control people, but then I read your post and realized that maybe I am one of those "dumb, easy-to-control people" being controlled by rapid associations. I would have eaten my words!

Good advertising works on buyer personas which are fictitious representations of ideal buyers.

If done right, then they work, and they work on most people, but the advertising you think is stupid and for the stupid is aimed at people other than you.

It may be different if you saw an advert for a great pair of headphones than were all day comfortable and cut out the sounds of dogs and babies.

Or a pair of sunglasses that go completely black when they detect more than 3 people in close proximity :D

Bad advertising drives me crazy and the dinosaurs like shaver companies often don't learn fast, even when market entrants start eating their breakfasts (Dollar Shave Club).

Yes!! I get so frustrated with advertisements. I often just find myself thinking "that would never happen in real life...this is so ridiculous!!!". I hate the ones where the people are overly enthusiastic or just really really fake

Apparently I've been analysing adds since I was 3 years old.

I laugh at adverts frequently. I also point out things that make no sense within adverts too. It annoys my husband some times because I will point out the same thing in an ad that's wrong every time, but it's because it's wrong and it irritates me. One example:

The part where he says the music is "literally coming out of my ears". Ummm....no Kevin, it's going into your ears because it's coming out of the headphones. Gets me every time it's on.

"I think I'm pregnant!"

"Wonderful, let's hope it's not another alien!"

HA! The milk commercials! These gave me a great laugh today. I love that cat who is reading on Military Strategies. Oh yeah, if they had thumbs, we would be taken over. They are smarter, kinder, calmer, less likely to flip the switch, and less likely to spill chemicals all over the place and more likely to say, 'Hey, man, relax!!"

Cats will rule when they get thumbs.

I like to think I'm one of the worst people to advertise to. I don't get suckered in to these sorts of things, I make decisions usually through careful research and by reviews.

I have my preferred brands but I'll deviate from them if reviews and features are elsewhere. Can't think of the last time I bought something, without wanting to buy something - I.E. I went out to buy a new pair of headphones and before I left my house I knew what model and colour I wanted.

Although I am a sucker for nice packaging but that's more a marketing thing. So if something comes in a nice tin.. or the packaging feels really premium.

Some of the adverts are frankly ridiclous though.. and don't even make any sense.

Actually, in college I wanted to major in advertising but was put in an "Art" design program instead of writing.

I don't know if it's the Aspie in me, or my ability to "hear" what is exactly being said (or not), but I can usually find the "angle" that no one else is picking up on. In fact, that's what I told my children: Find a niche, and market to it.

I've often used the example of the advertisement (infomercial) on TV that scares people that "thieves" can steal their credit card numbers by scanning through their purses or pockets, so the are now selling an "anti-theft" wallet to protect all your cards.

What do you have to do to get it? CALL AND GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD information. Not only that, they know you have enough cards that you need to protect them. That's INGENIUS (albeit possibly illegal) advertising, although my "theory" would render it as "selective ignorance" if someone didn't figure it out.

Advertisements that incorporate songs from our youth are also annoying, because some of those songs shouldn't be ruined by commercialism.

Advertising isn't stupid -- it's a highly honed marketing tool which some use better than others. How about the "Half Fast" Internet service. Say it out loud a few times like they do on the commercial, and you get "half-assed" ....

I wanted nothing else than to be able to convince people (or at least write so I could) that they needed a product. When I took marketing in school, the teacher brought up the advertisement of Nutregena (which was a soap you could see through). He said no one cares if they can see through their soap, as long as it makes them clean -- but they'll pay for it.

And round teabags; someone made a mint on them and just up and walked away. There are no "right" teabags, and that guy knew it. Advertising is an extremely difficult situation, and even if some (such as yourself, or myself) think a particular ad is stupid or annoying, we are doing what they want -- remembering and talking about it.

Last, there is a car dealer around my area who claims, "I even financed a dead guy." .... (which indicates he doesn't check SS#s)

I think tv advertising is boring.

Yes, but I find them MAJORLY annoying....but that's the point - so we sit around and talk about Ram trucks - they are in our heads. I am very literal so when someone tells that a certain shaving cream can save my soul, I walk away....

The key issue with advertisements is the same thing that plagues the products... it's all focus tested and market researched to hell and back... this is what killed creativity !

I miss a good funny commercial.

The ads and products are only as good as the people they are tested on!
