I didn't know poppies could be deep purple. I have only seen orange ones and red ones.
 
@tree yeah these are opium poppies. Opium poppies can be many different colors but I think purple is the most common color and generally it is showier than other poppy species. The other species generally are white, red, orange, pink, or yellow.
