Another well-intentioned attempt to "heal" my wounded soul and raise my self-esteem, this time in the form of a book called "Captivating, Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul" by John and Staci Eldridge. It's not quite as nauseating as the other book I was given, but it is so full of stereotypes. As if we women were one size fits all. Why can't we be seen as individuals?
Anyway, the Eldridges are not quite as naive as the author of the other book. They admit that women haven't always gotten the fairer shake in life. As they put it, "the story of the treatment of women down through the ages is not a noble history." But they go on to say that "no explanation for the assault upon Eve and her daughters is sufficient unless it opens our eyes to the Prince of Darkness and his special hatred of femininity."
Now that is a new twist. Women have been oppressed because Satan was jealous of Eve. And why was he jealous of Eve? Because "more than anything else in all creation, she (woman) embodies the glory of God. She allures the world to God." Oh, and by the way, we also bring life into the world. "Satan's bitter heart cannot bear it. He assaults her with a special hatred. History removes any doubt about this."
Oh, really? Then what about those verses of the Bible that have been used to oppress and silence women? Verses that say that women should be silent in church, they should not teach or have authority over a man? That it is a disgrace if they pray with their heads uncovered or cut their hair? Who inspired THOSE verses, huh?
It's funny that for over 2,000 years the church has played a leading role in pushing women to the side, and has stood against nearly every advance in women's rights. The church was not in the forefront for women getting the vote or owning property. And while I am pro-life I do feel that there is a great deal of validity in the feminist accusation that the pro-life movement is more concerned with controlling women's bodies than saving unborn babies. The recent flap about contraception doesn't help matters any. But NOW WE KNOW. It's a Satanic Plot!!!
Or is it? In "Sex, Genes and Rock 'n' Roll: How Evolution Has Shaped the Modern World," Rob Brooks makes a pretty good case that the situation we see is a result of evolution, and if we can understand the evolutionary factors that might have led to the social disparity between men and women we have a better chance of making a more just world for everyone. Which makes sense to me. Of course, some might argue that Brooks has been deluded by Satan, since after all, this world is Satan's territory and if you aren't a Christian, guess who is calling the shots in your life?
With that I submit a new theory about what causes autism and especially why autism rates have been rising. It's the Evil One. He knows his time is running out, so this is his way of grabbing as many souls as he can. I'm sure if I dug around in the Bible I could come up with a few verses that justify my theory. When you have that, you don't need any other proof.
