Ulterior motives

Earlier this week on facebook one of The Netherlands? philosophy programs put a query? they do have those daily on facebook, to spark debate and argument and I usually chip in.

This one was a tad interesting though. One of our nations universities (Universiteit van Utrecht) is going to overhaul their admission process. In includes serious conversations about your choice of course, assessments (currently; if you have the grades to match, you can enroll for must studies) as well as evaluations when you?re already doing the courses, to see if you actually have what it takes to be there. And it wasn?t that they were talking about grades. But personal motivation, goals, aspirations and in general the entire reason why you?re in this school to start with.

I applaud this, because I had a fair share of experience where I was like ?why am I actually here?? when I was in college/university.

The thing I did however pitch was; why only limited university? If you ask me, they should do this for college as well. And actually; while we?re at it, assess people like this for jobs as well. Unless you have decent motivation beyond ?I need to make money? I don?t know if job X is cut out for you. Heck? I had a run in with a person at a sandwich shop yesterday. She seemed grumpy and didn?t care about her job. Add in that she made mistakes by just not caring what she was doing, as long as she spend at least 8 hours at that place and did something her manager could qualify as ?a filled slot?. If you work at a sandwich shop, in my opinion, you better have drive and motivation to make the best sandwiches ever over ?I have bills?.

Granted; I might be an idealist and I?m way to honest about this, but if I don?t have personal motivation going on, I don?t really see myself doing that job. I had these arguments with possible employers in the past. They commended me for my honesty.

?Why do you want to work here??.
Well, social security law states I need to look for a job, and since this fits what I can do, I?m applying here.
?So, do you actually care what our company is all about??
Well, do you? Or can you pick 10 people for a similar job I?m applying for that can state the mission and philosophy this company has? Clearly people work to earn a living, not for charity. If you believed in charity and weren?t in it for the money, you probably wouldn?t have worn this expensive brand of clothing, this cologne, that watch that dwarfs your hand and I?m guessing you didn?t come here on foot either. Fact is, you?re in it for the money and if you have to you?ll lie about ulterior motives just to please however was in your seat right now.

That was pretty much it. It has to do with the inability to lie, as well as lacking a filter to leave out an extra bit of truth. To be honest, if I?m not getting a job anyway, I?ll at least provide the good sir a sleepless night and worrying over his personal goals. That?s just how I roll sometimes. And that?s when I?m feeling good to boot.

So anyway; motivation, employment and education. I feel that even in college they should assess if you?re in the right spot. And if not, relocate your sorry little <insert that cute little flag Craig Ferguson uses> to somewhere you belong. I do believe in stricter assessments for people to enroll in courses, as do I believe in better guidance, without one, the other can?t function properly.
I mean; Law here states, that unless you have a job and/or a degree you have to make sure you get any of those done until you?re 27. After that, you can file for social security and all and they?ll see what and how it works out. But until then? you?re deemed a high potential asset for employment. For me it turned out that I waste money and time just to get past 27 and get different ?service?. I barely had guidance or support. I?m not saying everyone needs that, but clearly some people do. Period. And if there?s laws stating that ?you have to do something? I?m all for enabling facilities to make sure that ?something? go be achieved. A similar note over here would be driving a car. Costs a ton of money to get a license (mandatory lessons; expect about 2500 USD before exams), yet it?s an unwritten requirement for most jobs. Result; some people drive around with no license and yet the government is like ?this is an outrage?. Reailty check; this is what happens.

On another related note, and it?s a big thing I still support.

Granted that doctors and lawyers (and a lot more of those professions) get a decent paycheck. They spend years learning their stuff and they have a lot of responsibility. The thing that irks me to no end, is that some people end up choosing such a career just because? ?it pays a lot?. If I want to be a lawyer, I want to be a lawyer because I believe in justice, and similarly if I want to be a doctor it?s because I want to help people, not because I believe that at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold. And weirdly enough, I sometimes feel that these kind of people that base their career choice on money, are the ones susceptible to corruption even more than others that genuinely care about the service they offer.

Though this notion of ?I want to earn a lot? does go hand in hand with the way money is worshipped or? excuse the pun, being given more credit, than it actually should.

Maybe I?m way to socialist for this all. On top of that this blog is slightly incoherent, but as such addresses a few points loosely connected to each other.
