Negative Assertion

Negative assertion is acceptance of the fact that an error has been made by you and that you acknowledge it without having to apologize or feel guilty.

Use negative assertion when you are being criticized for making a mistake that without doubt is 100% error and you are responsible for.

How to use negative assertion:

1. Accept your own feelings about the error
2. Keep your voice calm
3. Acknowledge the error without any self-put-downs
4. Do not deny or make excuses
5. Some broken record responses may be needed

Advantages:

1. It enables you to cope with criticism without falling apart
2. It keeps your self-esteem intact
4. It stops the tendency to become defensive and counter criticize.
