My favourite quote for Aspies

I enjoy reading this quote.

'I'd rather be hated for what I am, than to be loved for what I am not'

- This is a classic quote by my favourite singer, Kurt Cobain. His style of angry grunge music expressed the frustrations of Generation X (those growing up in the early 1990's) and later generations. Cobain made loud angry music that generate influences from pain - his parents' divorce, him dropping out of high school and him living and drifting away, until the release of his band's 2nd album, when he achieved breakout success.

Unfortunately, he fell prey to drug addiction, and died in 1994 due to drug overdose.

Given the level of hurt, pain, frustrations and anger in many Aspies, I can't find a more appropriate quote that I can use for Aspies.

Comments

Such a quote is close to my heart.

Of course I should add that it doesn't give me a freepass to do whatever I want.. I should be able to deal with consequences. However, there is a thin line about consequences that are silly and based on what people perceive it as, and consequences as such as a law.

In the past I've had people think of me differently because I was "weird"... I could deal without them and just try to manage my life without them. That works fine. It's a different deal if "who you are" is a struggle with law.

Funnily enough, I watched 8mm today, and at some point one of the antagonists says something along the lines of "there's no motive to this... I just like doing it". It's a similar quote, the only thing this is about is that he actually enjoys killing people as some kind of "fetish" of sorts. While it is against the law to kill, it's not against the law to have such preferences... (yet). And the same can be said about a plethora of sexual acts that are outlawed. Liking it isn't the problem, engaging in such activities is.

But I'm going on a big tangent here.

Cobain did what he wanted, the way he wanted. It was inherently him. It made him Kurt Cobain... and if people don't like it, so be it.

The problem I'm actually having with the quote a bit in current events, is that due to having "problems" with people responding the way they do in regards to me, is that I'm being made more aware that being me is a problem and that I should be aware of it... that's also the reason it might trigger depression and a slight identity disorder.

Perhaps it is good to try to understand ourselves, and to see what are our real motivations for doing everything. Then, we'll decide whether they fit our life's ethos, and whether it is a good idea to continue doing them. :D

Drug overdose? Don't you mean he / someone blew his head off with a shotgun? Apparently he did have a heoric amount of gear in him when he died, which is why people think he didn't do it himself, but gues we may never know.
